Hyundai Steel says Q3 operating profit rose 51%

Hyundai Steel’s quarterly profit rebounded, but its operating margin remains modest. Loharo calculates the change and separates product mix from an EU buyer’s next automotive-sheet quote.

Analysis. For European buyers of automotive flat steel, Hyundai Steel’s profit recovery is a supplier-health signal, rather than a new European price benchmark. No order change is warranted from these results alone: the company attributes the improvement partly to selling a richer product mix, which need not mean the price of the grade you buy has risen.

Hyundai Steel reported on 30 October that third-quarter consolidated operating profit reached KRW87.1 billion, up 51.0% from the previous quarter. Revenue fell 3.4% to KRW5.8971 trillion. The company credits higher selling prices for major products and a greater share of higher-value products, including automotive sheet.

The same company table puts net profit at KRW84.0 billion, up 594.2% quarter on quarter and 371.9% year on year. Yonhap’s filing-based report independently corroborates the net-profit total and annual increase. The release gives no separate reconciliation explaining why net profit rose much faster than operating profit.

The comparison with last year is less strong: the same results table shows operating profit down 6.5% year on year. Hyundai expects price increases and softer raw-material costs to improve profitability further in the fourth quarter. That is management’s outlook, not a confirmed result.

Loharo calculation · how much did the margin recover?

Analysis / calculation. Using the company’s consolidated revenue and operating-profit figures, in KRW billion throughout: Q2 margin = 57.7 ÷ 6,107.3 × 100 = 0.94%; Q3 margin = 87.1 ÷ 5,897.1 × 100 = 1.48%. The increase is 0.53 percentage points, calculated from the unrounded margins and then rounded to two decimals. This measures operating profit per unit of sales, not a steel-price increase.

Rounding note: Hyundai reports the margins as 0.9% and 1.5%, to one decimal place. Loharo calculates from the underlying profit and revenue, then rounds to two decimals; the unrounded margin difference rounds to a 0.53-point change, versus the company’s displayed 0.6-point change.

What it means for the next quote

Analysis. A buyer comparing an automotive-sheet renewal with an existing agreement should separate the base steel price from the premium for a different grade, coating or specification. Hyundai’s explanation combines price and mix; it does not quantify their individual contributions. Ask for an unchanged-specification comparison before treating a higher total quote as evidence of a broad price move. These consolidated figures also provide no Europe-specific delivery or allocation commitment.

Verification status: Verified

Consolidated figures were checked against Hyundai Steel’s Korean release, with net profit and the annual increase corroborated by Yonhap. The release gives no separate net-profit reconciliation; the Q4 outlook is management’s forecast. Loharo’s margin calculation and buyer implications are labelled analysis.
